This Reproduction of the German Gewehr Spreng Granat 30 is made from imitated Bakelite and machined steel parts.  This is a near perfect reproduction on the outside however some of the internal details were not replicated so that this replica can never be made functional.  Described part for part below:

This is the simplified late war model using a brown Bakelite base with a metal plate inset on the very bottom which would have protected the Bakelite when Fired.  The imitation Bakelite is made from resin and died a very close color and the given a filler to better approximate real Bakelite. There are several different variations of this simplified late war base so it might differ from some that you have seen before but it was copied from an original. The date on the inside of this reproduction is 1944.

The body of the replica is machined and painted yellow and also has the correct 44 date and manufacture ink stamp.  The yellow paint is a close match to the original yellow color and is very lightly applied just like most of the originals I have seen that still had paint.  The paint may have slight chips or wear from being handled around the shop.  The stamp will come off if rubbed hard but should remain crisp when handled normally; sometimes there is slight smudging were it didn't roll on the best but they are generally good.  The threads on the body will accept original parts (an original nose piece or Bakelite base.)  I can not guarantee it will fit all original parts but it is interchangeable with the originals that I have in my collection.  Inside the nose end of the body is a cardboard disc that replicates what would have been seen of the explosive charge in a live piece.  Behind the cardboard is an empty tube the inside diameter of which would not accept an original charge for obvious reasons.

The nose portion is made up of 4 parts; an outer shell, base, spring, and a simulated Bakelite plunger.  The shell of the nose has no wrench grooves which was common depending on manufacturer and has a very nice and correct stamp in the material.   The stamp lists the fuse name / 44 date / manufacturer / lot # / approval mark and is very crisp.  Unfortunately I can not get a good picture of the whole stamp.  The shell is much heavier than an original because it is turned from solid material and not stamped steel as the original would have been.  This was done so that the clockwork mechanism of an original would not function inside this nose piece even though this nose will accept original parts; again I can not guarantee that all originals will fit but the ones in my collection do.  The Bakelite plunger is sort of black and sometimes brown in color as originals and some have wood filler and some don't just like the originals.  The plunger was also made without the steel pin in the back.  The two pieces inside are there to support and give some springiness to the plunger.  All parts except the spring wear coated in black oxide.

I would rate this reproduction as 90% or better externaly and 50%ish on the inside.  If you gut an original of the clockwork mechanism and put it in this set it would be perfect inside and out but would never function as a real piece.  This is a beautiful display piece.  And with pitted originals priced well over $100 this may be a good alternative for collectors, film makers, and reenactors for display not for use in the field.  It is difficult to find an original in like new condition and even harder to find one with ink stamps.

Parts: If you are interested only in certain parts feel free to contact me.  It may be possible to replace the pitted and rusty ground dug parts with reproductions to make a great display piece.
